You've heard about the medical transcription profession. You have heard that you can make a pretty good living in this career and you think it's something you want to get involved in. Besides a good medical transcription course, you also have to think of aspects that pertain to your life, and yourself.

First of all, think about what is going on in your life at the moment. Do you sincerely have time for the training involved? Also, do you have the patience? Unless you absolutely love the work, medical transcription might not be the right choice for you. There is a lot of learning (medical terms) and typing, and you need to have good grammar and good spelling skills. You also need to be able to focus and be very organized.

Yes, there are spell checkers and short cuts. But, unless you are diligent about reading and correcting your work before it is submitted, you may miss a pertinent error. Also, the training is hard and it takes a lot of focus. Be sure this is what you really want before delving into it. For most people who get involved in transcription for doctors, hospitals, etc. the work is enjoyable and makes each day that much more fun.

Before you take your medical transcription course, decide what you want to do with it. Do you want to work exclusively from home or would you prefer an office setting?

Working from home has its obvious advantages, but it can also be wrought with distractions and chaos. For some people, an office setting will work out better for them. There are others there to help and keep you company. To get the most of your training and a good jump start on your career, work in an office or with others first and get your bearing on the job, then perhaps you will be able to break out into working from home. Your medical transcription career will be very rewarding if you plan ahead.
