We've talked about what it takes to become a medical transcriptionist. I'm sure you understand by now who might make a good MT, but is there anyone who would NOT make a good medical transcriptionist?

If you do not possess the following characteristics or do not desire to develop them then you are not cut out for the medical transcriptionist profession:

  • Patience - A medical transcriptionist must be patient.

  • Proficient in English language - You'll have to make sure your medical documents are free of grammatical and spelling errors.

  • Detail oriented - Your medical documents will have to carry at least a 98% accuracy rate.

  • Able to meet deadlines - You'll have strict deadlines every day. If you can't meet them then you won't succeed as a medical transcriptionist.

  • Familiar with medical terminology - You will see a lot of medical terms that you probably are not familiar with now. That doesn't mean you can't learn them, but you will need to learn them before you become a medical transcriptionist.

  • Good listener - You will have to listen to many audio reports and take dictation from them. Many times, you will be listening to a soft-spoken medical professional or a doctor with a thick accent. You'll need good listening skills.

  • Fast typer - Fast typing will help you meet a lot of deadlines, but fast typing without the ability to present near-perfect medical documents with few errors will not get you far. You need to be both a fast typer and a good proofreader.

  • Analytical - Not only will you be responsible for producing error-free medical documents, but you'll also have to make sense of the information you receive and dictate. That requires strong analytical skills.

Some of these skills are natural to your personality type and some are skills that you can learn on your own. However, there are skills that you can only learn in a medical transcription training course. If you are interested in becoming a part of the lucrative medical transcription profession then find a suitable course today.
