Where Do Medical Transcriptionists Work?

The medical transcription profession is one of the few professional careers that is technology-based and flexible in terms of working environment. There are professions like heavy equipment operators that are by nature outdoors professions (I'm not knocking it, just stating a fact). Then there are professions like insurance adjusters where you may work in an office all day one day then spend the entire day out of the office, but you wouldn't necessarily be self employed. You'd be working for someone else.

The medical transcription profession is a bit different. Many medical transcriptionists are self employed and work at home. Many more work in a doctor's office or a hospital. Some MTs actually work in a medical transcription company and either have their work proofread by a supervisor or quality control officer or they are they supervisor or quality control officer.

Another distinction of the medical transcription profession is that it is based on modern technology. Until medical transcription software became available it wasn't really necessary to have a full-time MT on staff, or to hire one out. The rise in technology actually gave rise to the profession.

Because it is such a specialized career, medical transcriptionists are paid well for their work. But the highest paid among the profession are those who have been formally trained in a medical transcription course.
