A lot of emphasis is placed on working at home as a medical transcriptionist. The reality is, however, that most trained medical transcriptionists do not work at an office. The latest figures indicate that about 75% work from home while 25% work at an office.
That doesn't mean that you can't do it or that you shouldn't. The choice is entirely yours, and it's an option that you can consider. But consider the skills it takes to be a work-at-home medical transcriptionist:
- You need a high degree of self discipline
- Strong organizational skills
- Good time management skills
- Be a self motivator
- Able to meet deadlines
- Good communicator, orally and in writing
- Strong sales ability (you will be your own marketing agent)
- Excellent money management skills
In essence, you'll be your own boss and you'll be a business owner so you'll need all the same skills that any other business owner needs PLUS the skills necessary to be an effective medical transcriptionist. If you possess the right skills and you have the desire then you can succeed at being a work-at-home medical transcriptionist.
On the other hand, you can also work in an office and there is no shortage of employers ready and willing to hire you once you complete your medical transcription training.
