Some people have the impression that medical transcription is a glorified receptionist or assistant position. This is absolutely an incorrect view so let me shatter any illusions you might have about the profession before you begin.

While it's true that medical transcriptionists should be able type accurately and quickly in order to perform dictations, it is not correct to say that they are administrative assistants. That's essentially where the similarities end. Here are some things that medical transcriptionists do that secretaries, receptionists and administrative assistants do not.

  1. Research medical information to ensure accuracy
  2. Verify patient information when necessary
  3. Use voice recognition software to enhance a medical document's integrity
  4. Ensure at least a 98% accuracy ratio on all medical documents
  5. Ensure a 100% accuracy ratio with regard to critical errors on medical documents
  6. Stay abreast of medical terminology and changes in the medical profession
  7. Meet stringent deadlines regarding the turnover of medical documents

These are just a few of the things that medical transcriptionists do that assistants and receptionists do not do. A medical transcriptionist is a highly skilled professional with specific job duties related to the medical profession. Not just anyone can do it. If you are a trained medical transcriptionist then you can command top dollar for your services. That's why a qualified and accredited medical transcription school is recommended for training in the profession.
