Medical transcriptionists are some of the highest paid professionals without a college degree. If you are looking for a lucrative career without having to spend four years and thousands of dollars working toward a college degree to qualify yourself then there is no profession better than the medical transcription profession.

But what can you expect to make and how do you make it?

Medical transcription salaries are based on how many lines of text you can type. That doesn't mean you can just throw text on the page and expect to draw a great pay check. There are standards.

On the other hand, if you can type fast and accurately then you can expect to earn top dollar. If you are a slow typist then you won't earn as much. And that's the key. You have to be able to accurately render a dictation into a credible and useful medical document quickly. You'll have deadlines. But you are also expected to maintain a low threshold for errors - 98% for major and minor errors and 100% accuracy for critical errors.

On the bottom end, you can expect to earn about 7 cents per line. Top earners can demand up to 13 cents per line. As a general rule, these numbers are determined by skill level, reputation and experience. But other considerations might also enter the equation. In May 2008, the median income for medical transcriptionists was $15.41 per hour.
