Are you familiar with the medical term "urology?" Do you know what a urologist does? We'll try to answer that question for you in this post.

A urologist is a person, a physician, who specializes in problems associated with the urinary tract. Some urologists may focus on male urological problems or female problems. Others generalize and include both genders in their practice. But it is a medical specialty with its own challenges and its own medical reports.

Urology is considered a subspecialty of surgery. That's because a urologist must have an in-depth knowledge of a lot of disciplines not associated specifically with the urinary tract. Incidentally, urologists also specialize in issues related to male reproductive organs (females have their own special doctor for this - obstetrics & gynecology).

Subspecialties of urology include:

  • Male infertility
  • Female urology
  • Pediatric urology
  • Renal transplantation
  • Urological oncology
  • Urinary tract stones
  • Neurology
  • Erectile dysfunction

Each of these subspecialties requires reports and medical documentation specific to that subspecialty. Urology itself has its own reports. A medical transcriptionist must be familiar with the types of reports a urologist may need and know how to prepare those reports.

Because urologists are busy professionals, they cannot prepare their own reports. That's why a qualified medical transcriptionist can be a huge benefit to any urology department.
