There is a lot of hype around working from home, but not all medical transcriptionists work from home. As a matter of fact, 40% of all medical transcriptionists are employed by hospitals. The other 60% are employed by doctors offices, physicians, medical transcription companies and self. Only a small percentage of MTs actually are self employed.

But self employment is not the only kind of employment that works from home. Many medical transcriptionists work for someone else but telecommute. That is, they work from home even though they have an employer.

Telecommuting has actually become a trend in computer jobs. You can consider medical transcription a computer job. After all, 90% of your time will be spent on a computer. You'll spend most of your time taking dictation, or transcribing. When you're not transcribing then you'll be editing, proofreading or researching. Most of your time will be spent on a computer and you can do that at home as well as anywhere else.
