Cardiology is the study of heart diseases. A cardiologist is a person who treats heart diseases, which can include heart attacks, heart failure, congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and many other heart conditions as well.

Heart diseases are very common. In fact, heart conditions are some of the most common types of medical problems in the U.S. That likely has something to do with so many people being overweight and dietary habits of the general population. That means that cardiologists will have a lot of patients, and as the Baby Boomer generation gets older that will give rise to more heart ailments.

What's that mean for you? It means that as a medical transcriptionist you'll have plenty of work.

Cardiologists need medical transcriptionists to create and maintain medical documents detailing the work they do on their heart patients. If a patient comes in for bypass surgery then that needs to be documented. If a patient was prescribed medicine for a heart condition then that needs to be documented. It is the medical transcriptionist who is responsible for that documentation.

As a medical transcriptionist, you'll have a long career even if you specialize in cardiology documents.
