Some people might mistake the medical transcription field as easy. There might be a perception that you can just jump right in and go to work. That would be far from the truth.

While there is no licensure required to be a medical transcriptionist, some training is necessary. You have to have a solid background and some skills to be able to work as a medical transcriptionist. Even if you work on your own without supervision, there's no such thing as faking it until you make it.

To be a medical transcriptionist you have to be able to take dictation and you have to be able to do it quickly. That requires an attentive listening ear as many medical professionals are not native-born English speakers. You may be taking dictation from a doctor who speaks English as a second language and you've got to be able to listen through thick accents from a recorder. On top of that, you'll have to be familiar with medical terms in a variety of disciplines, which means you'll be filtering through two languages to interpret the words into English. It's a tough enough challenge as it is.

And then you'll have to learn the different forms and types of transcription reports for every situation. Hospitals and doctors of various types have different requirements. You've got to be able to meet them all.

Medical transcription work is challenging. You can't just jump right in and go to work without the proper training.
