Ophthalmology is another medical specialty you should be familiar with and you should have a good working knowledge of terms associated with it. If you understand the terms that you'll be dictating, then you will spend less time researching and your medical documents will be more accurate. Plus, you'll meet your deadlines a lot sooner since you'll be spending less time researching and fact checking.

Here are 10 ophthalmology terms you should be familiar with as a medical transcriptionist:

  1. Aberration - A distortion in the eye that prevents light from converging into a single focal point when entering the retina.
  2. Blepharitis - Inflammation of the eyelids.
  3. Cataract - Clouding of the crystalline lens, which leads to blindness or reduced vision.
  4. Glaucoma - An eye disease characterized by increasing pressure within the eye. Left untreated, it could lead to blindness.
  5. Intraocular lens implant - A permanent artificial lens surgically inserted into the eye to replace the crystalline lens.
  6. Macula - Yellow spots on the retina.
  7. Ocular herpes - Herpes of the eye. An infectious disease that is the most common cause of corneal blindness in the U.S.
  8. Punctal occlusion - A surgical treatment that includes inserting plugs into the punctum to retain the natural lubricating tears produced by the eye.
  9. Retina - The lens of the eye. Just like the lens of a camera, it captures images and sends information back to the brain for processing.
  10. Wavefront - A machine that produces a detailed map of the eye.

The more ophthalmology terms you know the better a medical transcriptionist you will be, particularly if you are dictating medical documents for ophthalmologists.
