Nephrology is closely related to urology, which is the study of the urinary tract and its diseases with associated treatments. Nephrology is a narrower field within urology and is concerned with the care and treatment of the kidney.

As a medical transcriptionist, you'll need to be familiar with medical terms related to both fields of study. Nephrological terms you'll need to know include:

  1. Acute Tubular Necrosis - A condition that involves delayed kidney function. It is treatable and the damage to the kidney is reversible.
  2. Biopsy - A medical procedure that involves inserting a needle into the kidney to remove tissue for making a diagnosis.
  3. Dialysis - The procedure used for cleansing the blood of kidney failure patients.
  4. Hemodialysis - A dialysis procedure that uses an apparatus outside the body, usually called an "artificial kidney", for circulating blood.
  5. Negative Crossmatch - The positive result of a crossmatch test in order to determine whether a recipient's and a donor's cells match. If there is a negative crossmatch, then a kidney transplant can occur.
  6. Nephrectomy - A surgical removal of a kidney.
  7. Peritoneal Dialysis - A type of dialysis involving a catheter to remove waste from the kidneys.
  8. Prednisone - A drug used to prevent and treat a kidney rejection after transplant.
  9. Renal Failure - The medical term for kidney failure.
  10. Ureters - The tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

Your medical transcription course textbook will teach you many other medical terms you need to know.
