Every medical specialty has its terminology. Obstetrics & Gynecology is no different. It has associated terms that every medical transcriptionist should be familiar with.

Here is a list of terms that you should know before you start preparing medical documents for an OB/GYN specialist.

  1. ACTH - A hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Excessive levels could lead to fertility problems.
  2. Anovulation - An inability to ovulate.
  3. Cervical Stenosis - A blocked cervical canal due to a congenital defect or complication in surgery.
  4. Ectopic Pregnancy - A pregnancy that occurs outside of the uterus, usually within the fallopian tube.
  5. Fimbria - The opening of the fallopian tube nearest the ovary.
  6. Imperforate Hymen - A condition where the hymen fails to open and allow menstrual flow.
  7. In Vitro Fertilization - Ovary fertilization takes place outside the body in a glass dish.
  8. Ovarian Cyst - A sac filled with fluid inside the ovary. Often associated with ovarian cancer, but not always.
  9. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) - Infection of the pelvic organs. Could lead to tubal blockage or pelvic adhesions.
  10. Postpartum - The period up to six weeks after delivery.
  11. Salpingitis - Inflammation of the fallopian tube.
  12. Tubal Ligation - The procedure for cutting and tying the fallopian tubes to prevent future pregnancies.
