Is medical transcription a job, a career, or a profession? I guess it depends on your mindset. But let's talk about the difference between these three categories of occupation.

  • Job -A job is any work for which you are paid. It can be temporary or long term, part-time or full-time. It need not have any expectation beyond the paycheck.
  • Career - A career is a long-term or lifelong occupation. In other words, it's more than just a job. It's a job with an end goal in mind. Another way to say that is, it's a job with definite long-term benefits and that exceed merely trading work for dollars.
  • Profession - A profession is any occupation that requires specialized training.

Now, let's answer the question: Is medical transcription a job, a career, or a profession?

Honestly, it can be all three. If your goal is to simply find work and you don't set your sights on any particular long-term benefits, then all you have is a job. But medical transcription work is a lot more rewarding if you seek those long-term benefits.

It is most definitely a profession. While you can become a medical transcriptionist without training, you'll be much more competitive and qualified if you find a good medical transcription course and apply yourself. After that, you'll be a professional medical transcriptionist with great prospects for a career. That's when you'll find the true benefits of this occupation.
