There are many different things that can affect the day of an MT. Whether they work at home, an office or a hospital can affect the tasks that must be done in a shift. There are also some things that all MTs will do regardless of where they transcribe. Here are some things that are typical in the day of any MT no matter where they work.

  • Obtain dictation from physicians or other health care professionals; this can be through the internet or sometimes scan be picked up at the facility if working as an MT from home
  • Listen to the recordings on a headset
  • Type out the words that are heard into a personal computer using a word processing program
  • Create discharge summaries, make reports of history and physical examination of the patient discussed, make operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, progress notes, and referral letters; everything a permanent health record would contain must be in electronic form in the end
  • Edit all reports for grammar and other mistakes
  • Double check for discrepancies and errors in reports and check with the physician or healthcare professional in order to correct them if that is the source
  • Use voice recognition software which transcribes dictation into written text and generates reports which must then be edited for mistakes in translation and grammar
  • Return transcribed documents to the physicians or other healthcare professionals who dictated them for review and signature, or correction; typically done over the internet if from home
These are all tasks that can be considered routine for an MT no matter where they work. It is the core of what a medical transcriptionist does.
