You can have a successful career in medical transcription from anywhere in the world. Whether you work for someone else and receive a steady paycheck or you freelance and earn a fluctuating income based on your current level of work, you can do the work from anywhere. There are three levels of medical transcription employment.

  1. On Location Employment - This form of work can be as a salaried employee or as a freelancer that works on location then moves to a different work site based on the client needs. This could be in the form of temporary work through an agency or by way of full-time employment with benefits. Since physicians, hospitals and other medical professionals require medical transcription and they exist all over the world, you can perform on location employment anywhere at all.
  2. Telecommuting - As a telecommuting professional you can work out of your home or anywhere else. You generally work for someone else, but you work out of the home. This is increasingly more popular. It allows companies an opportunity to save on office space while still getting their transcription needs met. You get the same salary and benefits as if you worked on location and in some cases the company you work for will pay for a part of your Internet services connection.
  3. Full-time Freelancing - Under this classification, you are on your own. You may work for as many employers as you can manage and you own the business. You can work out of your home or on the road so you have the same benefits as a telecommuter, but your salary fluctuates based on the amount of work you have. You are also responsible for your own benefits, advertising and business expenses.

Medical transcriptionists can live anywhere in the world. No matter your employment classification or who your employer is, location is just a detail that doesn't influence your prospects for success. However, some cost of living differences between one location and another may influence your income though the amount of work you can obtain as a medical transcriptionist is the same no matter where you live.
