As an MT, there is always an option to work from home, whether it is desired now or in the future. Not only can you work from home for a company or facility, but you can start your own medical transcription business or work as a single contractor. In this case, you must possess organization skills or the desire to develop them.

Organizational tips for working as an MT include:

  • Pencil me in! Keeping a detailed schedule of your days, weeks, and months will assist you in being a better MT. You should keep a daily schedule as well as a desk calendar handy. You are your own boss when working from home, but you are your own administrative assistant as well! Your desk calendar can be general only marking dates as having something scheduled but your daily planner should be detailed with the answers to what day/time, where, who, and anything else personal to the appointment. It is important to not overbook your days as your work should be your best effort and if you are rushed, it will not be.
  • Piles of papers. People tend to stick paperweights on papers creating large piles of unnecessary messes all over their offices. In your home office, you should have cabinets or folders or something to keep papers where they belong. Clean off your desk daily as to keep the messes minimal. Use a shredder when necessary and toss anything not needed. Mark your containers, folders, and binders noting the contents on the inside. Doing all of these will help you stay organized and not lost in paperwork.
  • Money money money. Invest in a software that will balance your books. Record keeping is vital for you as a business owner in your home. Receipts, reasons for spending, and income must be kept track of accurately for your own benefit as well as for tax purposes.
  • Advertise! Websites, business cards, and word of mouth can get you the clients you need to be successful. Offer promotions to healthcare facilities and if they like your work, they will likely use you for transcription in the future.

While these medical transcription organizational tips may not be easy to follow, they will benefit you and your home business, guaranteed. After all, it is time consuming to be organized and do things right, but it takes less time than doing it wrong.
