If you are interested in becoming a medical transcriptionist, training is an important first step. There are many different opportunities and options available for training, but before you decide to start there are some things that need to be considered. These tips will give you a head start for training and your entire MT experience.

Improving your typing skills - No matter how often you use a computer, your typing skills can always be improved. Successful transcriptionists can type at least 60 or 70 words per minute so start practicing and keep on doing so. There are programs available online as well as typing practice software you can purchase to assist you with improvements.

Start learning medical terminology NOW - One of the toughest parts of being a medical transcriptionist is being able to correctly and rapidly type long, difficult medical terms. Your transcription experience will be much easier if you have a familiarity with  the terms. You can start by having a terminology book on hand even before you begin training so you can get a head start.

Check out as many companies and jobs as possible - The more medical transcription training companies you check out, the higher your chances will be of finding one that’s right for you. Take your time and carefully weigh all of your available opportunities.

Inquire - As soon as you think you know the top candidates for training programs, create a list of questions you may have. Ask as many questions as needed once you know what program you will choose.   You don’t want to run into any unexpected surprises after beginning medical transcription training, so ask those questions now. It is worse to leave a question unasked than to dislike the answer.
