There are two factors that determine the high demand for medical transcriptionists:
- The aging population
- A contractual requirement imposed by insurance companies
How do these work together to increase the demand for medical transcription work?
As baby boomers grow older, their need for health care increases. A greater demand for health care increases the demand for medical transcription since medical transcriptionists are employed by doctors, hospitals and other professional who rely on the skills of the medical transcriptionist to present the necessary documentation for the health care that is provided.
Secondly, insurance companies require physicians and hospitals to provide an accurate dictation report before they will pay invoices. Since most physicians and hospital staff do not have the time (or the skills) to provide those reports themselves, they must rely on the technical skills of a trained and qualified medical transcriptionist.
All this means that a qualified and skilled medical transcriptionist can expect to have a secure future since demand for their skills is high and increasing. And now that President Obama's health care plan has become law, we expect that to affect the demand for medical transcriptionists as well. Since more people will be insured, we should see an increase in the amount of health care that is provided. That will mean the need for more medical transcription work. And it should also increase the amount of pay a skilled medical transcriptionist can demand as well.
